Syed Ibrahim B.H.M. has been teaching, conducting and performing in the percussion field for 30 years. Being a versatile percussionist himself, he has also been actively involved in combos and stage bands. Syed began his musical training in the early days of the Singapore School Band Movement in 1965 in the Hua Yi Primary School Band with the Assistant Director (Music) Ms.Teo Lay Nah and Band Director Mr.Leong Chee Cheong as his early teachers. Being an innovative person he quickly surpassed the basic requirements of percussionist in those days and begun experimenting and studying all the various percussion instruments. Since then, he has not stopped doing so! One can see his particular style and penchant for innovation in his various arrangements and compositions, some of which has been performed for premiership. Never satisfied with how a particular work sounds, Syed will always take the necessary steps to re-score a work to sound to date. To this end Syed has even taken Orchestral and Symphonic works and arranged them for Percussion Band. Syed has been instrumental in the establishment of many school’s Percussion Band which have achieved Gold Medals at the Singapore Youth Festivals since 1984. In addition to teaching, conducting and performing, Syed is the Band & Programme Director of the HeartBeat Percussion Band since its formation in 1989. Under his baton, the Band has developed tremendously - clinching awards in music competitions and participating in prestigious overseas festivals. Passionate in the creation and conceptualising of music programmes for schools, Syed has developed various workshops for both teachers and students as enrichment programme. His commitment towards the excellence of music education in schools has been seen through the achievements of the schools he has taught. His creative and artistic attributes are immense. He works with the National Arts Council and Peoples Association on numerous projects like the Singapore Arts Festivals and Chingays. As a musician who constantly pushes the familiar boundaries, he was integral in the conceptualization and execution of the 2005 Community Drumming Festival, which saw some 3000 percussion enthusiasts drumming together in harmony. Ever since then, he has been constantly creating opportunities to promote Community Drumming amongst the community; with the strong belief that drumming brings people together. Syed is of every aspect a well-rounded educator. He has been formally trained in Experiential Learning Processes, as well as the facilitation art of Community Drum Circle (Hawaii) and HealthRHYTHM Programme (Texas). Also coming from the Schools of Experiences, his artistic affluence and years as music educator, Syed was instrumental in the setting up the Performing Arts Department and held the position of Head of the Performing Arts Department in the St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School from 1993-2001. His commitment and experience was integral in the school attaining Autonomous Status in 2001. In addition to his work as an educator & facilitator, he served as a REMO Artist Endorsee for 1 year, where he was given the support to promote Community Drum Circles in Singapore. And in recognition of his dedication to his craft, Syed is a proud recipient of the Spirit of Enterprise (Singapore) Award as well as the Citation Of Excellence in recognition of outstanding contribution to Percussion Education by the Percussive Arts Society (USA) at the recent National Percussion Band Festival at Indianapolis, the United States of America. |
