Tony started his music career in 1968 as a rhythm guitarist with local ‘60’s pop band Trailers. He moved on in the band as a drummer and developed a passion for the discipline. A self-taught drummer, Tony became the chief drum instructor at Yamaha Music School from 1972 - 1979. In 1973, he studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music and upon his return, published 3 drums instructional books that were used by the students at the Yahama Music School. Show business beckoned and Tony became the drummer with the Richard Ortega band at the Tiara Supper Club at the Shangri-La for 10 years, backing a line up of international names like The Seekers, Three Degrees, Sandpipers, Francis Yip, Anita Sarawak. He soon became the bandleader for the Neptune Theatre Restaurant’s six-piece orchestra. A versatile drummer, Tony was also a popular studio sessionist, recording albums for Dick Lee, Anita Sarawak, Tracey Huang, Francis Yip, Sarah Chen, Camy, and many more.
In 1986, he formed jazz and fusion band Jeramzee, with Singapore’s “King of Swing” and Cultural Medallion winner Jeremy Monteiro and quintessential bassist Ramli Sharrif. Jeramzee was the resident band at Saxophone Club for the next 4 years. They recorded 2 albums, “Back to Basics” and “Faces & Places” and have toured with Grammy winning saxophonist Ernie Watts in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Jak Jazz Festival 1988. In 1990, Tony joined one of Singapore’s most successful bands, Jive Talkin’ working with the late guitarist, Bani Farook. The band’s repertoire includes pop, jazz, R&B and performed in Bali, China, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. Tony has also jammed with Grammy winner Kenny G. Tony has also performed in 3 musical productions – Hello Broadway! , The Wedding Banquet and Edith Pia,f and at a Charity Gala 2004 concert “The Power of Love” which was graced by our President, Mr S.R. Nathan. With a music career that has spanned more than 30 years, Tony is still a much sought after musician, performing regularly with MDC, EMI recording artiste Claressa Monteiro, as a judge for Singapore Drum Festival 2007 and 2008. Tony continues to share his knowledge with young aspiring drummers.
